Twelve beautiful girls from China who are among the most gifted musicians in the world, play a blend of jazz, pop and classical music on ancient Chinese instruments, creating an international music phenomenon. Named the 2004, "International Artist of the Year," their latest CD, Eastern Energy, quickly went platinum, and concerts sell out around the world - often in less than 30 minutes. With the PBS airing of the 12 GIRLS BAND: LIVE FROM SHANGHAI concert, they officially join the ranks of major global crossover acts Enya, Yanni, Buena Vista Social Club and Riverdance. Going from Coldplay's Clocks to Enya's Only Time to timeless jazz classic, Take Five, they make 1500 years of Chinese musical tradition imaginatively contemporary.
Conservatory trained, they play contemporary music on gu zheng, pipa, dizi and other ancient instruments with a technical virtuosity and intensity that is altogether intoxicating. Their sound "is about as Chinese as Enya is Celtic," notes Time, "but their culture-shockproof tunes travel well across borders."
